Summary: Phase 1. Exploration phase to build an enabling environment

The Department of Health (DOH) in Thailand is considering a transition from IFA to MMS. Between 2022 and 2023, Mahidol University (MU) collaborated with Vitamin Angels (VA) to conduct a landscape analysis on MMS, map country’s readiness for MMS integration as a part of antenatal care (ANC) services, and recommend strategic investments for effective MMS introduction. In 2024, this work culminated with the MU team creating an MMS roadmap for the country. To have continued advocacy for MMS, a Technical Advisory Group comprising of key decision makers from MoH and academic experts from the country were brought together for several consultations to provide inputs on ongoing MMS activities.

Stakeholders have identified a need for implementation research to identify effective strategies for improving MMS uptake and adherence. Alongside this effort, there is a need for advocacy with the DOH to update national guidelines to include MMS and to add MMS to the national essential medicine list.

In 2025, MU, with technical and funding support from VA, is planning to conduct an MMS systematic review specifically for Thailand, and work on finalizing the study methodology for formative research (to be conducted in 2026).
