Summary: Phase 3. Scale-up delivery at the national or sub-national level
Burkina Faso has made substantial progress in Phase III of its Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) program. MMS has been officially included in the country’s Essential Medicines List (EML), antenatal care (ANC) guidelines, and other key national health policies. A regulatory framework with established quality standards is in place, and national intervention and advisory groups have been formed to guide implementation. Training for healthcare providers has been conducted in two pilot districts and extended to five additional districts. MMS is now integrated into both health and logistics management systems, supported by communication strategies that include advocacy with community leaders, media campaigns, and the use of reporting tools. Monitoring systems are actively tracking coverage and adoption among pregnant women. Implementation has been supported in 7 out of 70 districts through partnerships with key stakeholders such as the Family Health Directorate, Nutrition Directorate, the COVID-19 Response Project, the African Institute of Public Health (IASP), UNICEF, The Hunger Project, and the PRSS/ASN project. The next steps involve developing a comprehensive national scale-up plan, mobilizing the necessary resources, executing the plan, and establishing robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to ensure sustained progress.
