Programs
Summary: Phase 3. Scale-up delivery at the national or sub-national level
Since 2009, the Government of Mongolia has been implementing a micronutrient supplementation program, providing free of charge distribution of multiple micronutrient supplements to young children, pregnant and lactating women, with ANC used as an MMS delivery platform.
In 2020, the Ministry of Health approved new guidelines to improve the provision of vitamin and mineral supplements for children and women, aiming to prevent and reduce micronutrient deficiencies. In addition, a 2019 Joint Order of the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Health states that MMS procurement costs are included in the per-capita budget of primary healthcare facilities, and that the number of women receiving MMS is part of their performance indicators.
The National Nutrition Survey from 2023 assessed the micronutrient status of Mongolian women and children, as well as micronutrient supplementation coverage, including MMS. In 2022, with technical and financial support from UNICEF Mongolia, the Department of Nutrition and Food Safety (DNFS) of the National Center for Public Health conducted an assessment of the supply, availability, and use of micronutrient supplements for children and women in health facilities and factors affecting it among pregnant women of selected provinces and districts of Ulaanbaatar city. A policy, strategy/plan of action that includes MMS for pregnant women has been finalized and approved by government, with MMS discussed in broader nutrition coordination mechanisms, with advocacy/awareness raising activities related to MMS programmes conducted in 2024.
